FAQ

Q.  How do I make sense of all this stuff?
A.  There basically two components of this blog.  One is to track the performance results of the model portfolio that I put together in May of this year.  On the middle of each month, I review the results of the portfolio.   The second part of the blog is a weekly update that looks at Canadian stocks whose share prices are making notable gains.

If you click on the model portfolio label on the sidebar, it will bring up all the posts related to the portfolio, so you can simply filter out the relevant posts.

If you click on the momentum stocks label, it will bring up each week's review of the stocks that are making positive headway.

The other labels are the Stock Identifiers and the number next to it shows how many times I have identified it as moving upwards.  If you click on the label CSU or CP, you'll see the price details of that stock for the particular week, it was identified.

Q.  How many stocks are you tracking?
A. Last count, 66 stocks.  I split them into price baskets ... stocks in their low 20s, high 20s, low 30s, high 30s, etc. etc. stocks over 100, stocks over 120, stocks over 150, stocks over 200.
Whenever a stock price moves from one basket to another, I record it.  So if a stock breaks through $35, the next time I note it will be when it breaks past $40.  If it subsequently goes down, I stop tracking it until the stock price moves beyond the last high.

Q.  Don't you know this way of tracking stocks is just a guess on where it's going?
A.  Absolutely, it's not a science, but I go by the idea of "The trend is your friend".

Q. Why are you tracking the momentum stocks?
A.  Looking for opportunities.  If a stock has shown a bias towards moving upwards and then stops, I try to understand why.  Has it run it's cycle? Was there a bad earnings report or bad news?  However it continues to move upwards for months, it might be a candidate for me to invest in it.

Q.  Where do you get your information?
A.  I use google finance a lot. I also read a lot of the reports from TD Waterhouse, my discount brokerage.
